Soundwart is out - the first public release 0.1.0. Soundwart controls the Sonos players on your own network, without an account and without a detour through the cloud.
Why another app? Sonos ships one for the Mac itself. It was still running under Rosetta 2 until August 2026, and going native on Apple Silicon is about all that has changed: beyond that it is the app it has been for years. Before we lose our religion: Soundwart sets out to do it better. Lean, fast, and with the source in the open, ready to be changed at any time. It talks to the players over UPnP events (GENA) - no polling, no SOAP requests every few seconds.
In the first release:
- Menu bar control for every group you have set up, with the current track, play/pause, previous and next, volume and mute.
- The queue: reorder by dragging, remove tracks, jump to a track, drop search results in at a position.
- Search across the Apple Music catalogue for songs, albums and artists, plus TuneIn radio stations and artist stations.
- Favorites and playlists: play and manage your Sonos favorites, save the queue as a playlist and load it back.
- Playback options: shuffle, repeat, crossfade, sleep timer.
- Live updates through GENA event subscriptions: what happens at the speakers syncs straight into the app.
- Wired into macOS: the current track in Control Centre, and the keyboard’s media keys driving the players whatever app has focus.
Soundwart expects a Sonos system that has been set up once in the official app: rooms named, streaming services connected to the household. Setup, alarms, EQ and TruePlay stay with the official app - Soundwart controls what is already there.
Apple Music is the only service tested so far. Anything else is not officially supported and untested.
It needs macOS 26 or later and at least one player on S2 firmware. Updates arrive through Sparkle against a self-hosted appcast.
